Faridpur is one of the oldest districts in Bangladesh, established in 1786. It has a long history of agricultural advancement. Crops such as jute, rice, sugarcane, wheat, onions, mustard, and chili contribute significantly to the district’s economy. Some of these products have very ancient histories, with their production and use continuing for generations. However, despite being produced in Faridpur for hundreds of years, none of these products have yet received GI (Geographical Indication) recognition. Therefore, there’s an opportunity to work towards achieving GI status for products from Faridpur. Today, I’ll be discussing the potential GI products of Faridpur.
Jute and Jute Products
Faridpur district is particularly renowned for its jute. Jute is a very important agricultural product for the district’s farmers. Beyond Faridpur, jute is a cash crop throughout Bangladesh and in international markets. For centuries, Bengal’s jute has been known and popular worldwide, and our economy has developed around it. Thus, jute is a crucial product for GI recognition. Additionally, over a hundred types of products are manufactured from jute. Some of these products are very popular and regularly used, and jute is an environmentally friendly product.
Considering the importance of jute, the Faridpur District Administration has designated it as part of its district branding. Therefore, initiatives can be taken to apply for GI status for jute and jute products from this district.
Date Palm Jaggery (Khejur Gur)
Faridpur district is famous for its date palm jaggery. The reputation and tradition of its jaggery span a long time. Date palm trees are commonly found along the roads, on field boundaries, and in the courtyards of homes in Faridpur. The sight of pots of date palm sap on winter mornings is a familiar scene in Faridpur. From this sap, jaggery and patali (solidified jaggery) are made and distributed across various parts of the country. The taste of authentic Faridpur jaggery is indescribable. Through GI recognition, there’s an opportunity to preserve its past reputation and awareness, as well as increase production and marketing.
Para Sandesh
Gurer Para Sandesh (jaggery-based Para Sandesh) is made right in Faridpur town and is exceptionally delicious. This Para Sandesh is made from the sap of Faridpur’s date palm jaggery and is considered a tradition of Faridpur. GI recognition would increase opportunities for its marketing in Dhaka and other parts of the country.
