Potential GI Products of Madaripur

Madaripur is a district adjacent to the capital city, Dhaka. Its economy is primarily agriculture-dependent. However, with the opening of the Padma Bridge, there’s a significant opportunity for radical transformation in Madaripur’s economy, a shift that has been evident in newspapers for over a year. Especially in agriculture, excellent opportunities have emerged for Madaripur. Furthermore, the district’s weaving industry has also seen improvements. Today, I’m discussing Madaripur’s potential GI products and district branding products.

Madaripur’s Date Palm Jaggery

Madaripur’s date palm jaggery is famous throughout the country and is an incredibly delicious food item. For a long time, it has played a role in alleviating poverty for the people of this region. It’s a favorite food for everyone, young and old. In winter, whether you’re eating muri (puffed rice), pitha (cakes), or sweets, date palm jaggery is always a part of it.

Due to the abundance of date palm trees in Madaripur district, date palm jaggery contributes to the livelihoods of 250,000 people across 50,000 families. They produce jhola gur (liquid jaggery), bheli gur (solid jaggery), chite gur (molasses), patali gur (solidified jaggery cakes), and nolen gur (new jaggery). Besides selling in the domestic market, they also privately export to 10 countries. Combining its domestic and international demand, its role in rural employment, and its reputation, date palm jaggery has been identified as Madaripur’s district branding product.
