Sonargaon, the ancient capital of Bengal, was part of Narayanganj district. Narayanganj earned the reputation of “Dandy of the East” due to jute, Bengal’s primary commercial product. (1) The world’s largest jute mill, Adamjee Jute Mills, is also located in Narayanganj district.
Additionally, many business establishments and organizations are located in Narayanganj, including BJMA (Bangladesh Jute Mills Association), an organization of jute traders and exporters; BKMEA (Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association), an organization of knitwear exporters; Hosiery Association, the headquarters for hosiery industry entrepreneurs; and many more. The glorious Bengali Muslin and Jamdani also originated in Narayanganj. Narayanganj district is very advanced in industry and commerce. However, there is ample opportunity to increase the number of GI products in the district. Today, I’ll discuss Narayanganj’s potential GI products.
Jamdani Products
Jamdani is an integral part of Bengali tradition. It is the country’s first GI product. Jamdani is known as a new version of Muslin and holds a special place in the hearts of Bengali women, carefully preserved in their wardrobes for generations. However, various other products are also made from Jamdani besides saris, such as Panjabis, three-piece suits, ornas (scarves), Kurtis, curtains, shawls, purses, gowns, and other Western wear. Authorities can list these garments that meet all the criteria for GI recognition and strive for their acknowledgment.
Chak Semai
Chak Semai has been handmade in Narayanganj for many years. Because it is handmade, its taste is distinct from any other shemai (vermicelli). Chak Semai provides employment for everyone, young and old, who work tirelessly, day and night, year after year. Especially before Eid, artisans in Charitalluk village, Rupganj Upazila, have to work around the clock.
