Shariatpur, a district in central Bangladesh, is a region of immense potential. Its economy is primarily agriculture-dependent. GI products can play a significant role in the district’s branding and economic development. Therefore, today I’m writing about the potential GI products of Shariatpur.
Shariatpur’s Potential GI Product: Pottery
For many years, pottery products have been manufactured in Bhedarganj Upazila of Shariatpur. The pottery from this area has maintained its reputation since ancient times. Although the use of pottery products has decreased compared to earlier times, various kinds of toys, showpieces, utensils, and different types of pots and pans are still produced. Shariatpur’s pottery products are exported to nearly 20 countries, which strengthens the country’s economic development and branding. If any of this pottery receives GI recognition, it could further expand its export market.
Bell Metal Industry
The bell metal industry is a very old profession in Shariatpur. About a hundred years ago, people from the Kangsabonik lineage started making various items from bell metal. The village of Dasartta in Shariatpur Sadar Upazila was famous for producing bell metal. Although it has lost its former glory over time, Shariatpur’s bell metal industry still survives. If any product from this industry can be brought under GI recognition, it could regain its golden glory. Shariatpur’s bell metal industry, through GI recognition, will contribute to economic development and also play a role in enhancing our health protection.
Naria Sandesh
The history of Naria Sandesh spans over a hundred years. In those days, its fame spread to the neighboring region of Kolkata through Indian traders. Naria Sandesh still maintains its good reputation. If this Sandesh receives GI recognition, its market in the capital will expand.
